Letters to Rowan

When the Koalid was born, we got hundreds of comments and likes. I saw that and was touched by the outpouring of positive feelings towards here. I know that she's beautiful and wonderful, but one day in the future, she may doubt herself. On that day, it would mean the world for her to know how many people care about her.

Maybe she'll find this page herself when she is old enough. Maybe the time will come when I feel it's time to show her.

So, please share your feelings with future Rowan. Tell her how excited you are that she was born. Tell her what you want to teach her as she grows up. Tell her all the wonderful things that a girl should hear from those who care about her.

  1. Rowan, let me be the first to say that you a blessing in our lives. I'm sure that your mother and I and you will face many challenges as the years go by, but know that every day we know we are truly blessed to have you with us.

  2. Rowan, this is Megan, your Godmother. Your parents are so terrific, and one of whom has been my best friend for my whole life. Your Mom and I grew up together and I couldn't be happier for her and your Dad. You are so beautiful and have made them so happy, proud and blessed. I love you very much, and am so happy you're finally here with us!!! <3

  3. Rowan, I have not known your Mommy and Daddy for very long, but I've enjoyed learning all about you through Facebook. (Does that even exist anymore? If not, ask Dad. He'll explain it.)

When you came into this world, I saw literally hundreds of people liking your dad's statuses and commenting on your beautiful baby pictures. There's one photo of the two of you -- it was taken by your grandfather, I believe -- of him holding you over his shoulder and your beautiful little eyes are wide open.

Now, as your dad knows. I don't like tiny humans. Never have, never will. I'm a dog person. But your picture simply took my breath away. You are a blessing to your parents and to everyone that loves you, and I'm honored to say I was included in the lovely little circle of people that got to electronically see your entrance into this world. You're not even a few days old, and you've already changed the lives of so many.

  4. Hi Rowan!

First of all, I love your name. My friend has a son named Rowan. Hooray for unisex names!

So, you've probably figured out by now that you have a pretty awesome Dad (and I'm sure Mom, but unfortunately I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting her). You see, Rowan, you are a very lucky and fortunate young lady. Why? Because there are things you will never have to worry about that many people today, and even when your Dad and I were younger did.

You see Rowan, back here in the dark ages of 2014 people were still being bullied, shunned, and ostracized (sometimes by their own family) all because of who they love.

But Rowan, I know you don't have to worry about any of that. Because not only do you have a Dad that is tolerant of other races, religions, genders, sexes, etc; but, you have a Dad who is completely loving, open, embracing, and encouraging of anyone who is different. Did you know your Dad once saw an anti-gay ad and it prompted him to donate money to a pro-gay campaign?

Rowan, your Dad is not going to care is you are cis, trans, gay, bi, straight, gender queer, have a shaved head, purple hair, dress like a boy, poly, mono, etc. What he will care about is what's on the inside, and if you are happy. Rowan, unfortunately there are parents out there that want their children to be a mold of what they accept and tolerate, and sadly that is often very limited. Lucky you to have a Dad who wants you to be a mold of who *you* want to be.

Rowan, there are people out there who will tell you that you shouldn't dress a certain way, shouldn't kiss certain boys (or girls, or whoever), shouldn't flirt. Ignore them. You've probably read your Dad's open letter to anyone who wishes to court you. Rowan, you are also lucky to have a very open minded and sexually liberal Dad (hopefully you are now old enough to hear talk like this). Do you know what I bet your Dad wants you to be as you explore sex and relationships? Safe.

One last thing. If you ever come across photos of your Dad during a time in his life that involved fishnets, just know it's one of the reasons that makes your Dad so cool, open, and accepting.

Welcome to the world, Rowan. I hope your journey thus far has been meaningful and amazing. Smile and laugh often, love openly, see the good in people, be accepting, forgive easily, and "don't dream it, be it".

    Rowan,

There are many things I want to say, but I can't figure out what to start with. First of all, you are more special than you know. I never thought I'd ever have a child, but fortunately I was able to find the right person to help me make that dream come true.

Years ago, my doctor told me that due to several complications, having a child before age 35 was probably my only chance to be a mom. At 34 1/2, your Dad agreed to try to have a baby. When I found out that I was pregnant with you, I couldn't contain my excitement and even to this day still call you my miracle baby.

I'll never forget the first time you grabbed my hand the night you were born, or the first time you smiled (even if it meant you were pooping or gassy), and I can't wait to hear your first words and see you take your first step.

No matter what happens down the line, whatever path you choose, whatever you want to be, know that your father and I love you more than anything, and you are our first priority.....and I wouldn't have it any other way.
